Why concrete table tops

Why choose concrete table tops?

Concrete table tops are more than just practical surfaces — they're a statement feature. Unlike timber or laminate, concrete provides depth, character and serious longevity.

01

Timeless, modern look

A timeless, modern look with endless customisation options. Sleek polished, natural stone exposed aggregate, or subtle honed — your top, your design.

02

Long-lasting durability

Built for high-use areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and alfresco settings. Concrete is incredibly strong, and our sealing process ensures the top resists everyday wear and tear.

03

Heat and stain resistant

When sealed correctly, concrete handles direct hot pans without scarring and resists wine, oil and acid stains. Indoor or outdoor, sealed concrete is built for daily use.

04

Low maintenance

Minimal upkeep required. A wipe-down keeps the surface clean. Re-seal every 2-3 years — about 20 minutes of work with a soft cloth.

Why CoastCrete

Concrete tops made to order

There are many advantages of a concrete table top. Built to Last: concrete is incredibly strong, making it ideal for high-use areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and alfresco settings. Our sealing process ensures your table top resists everyday wear and tear. Custom Style: choose from a wide range of finishes, colours, and textures. Indoor and outdoor use — our concrete table tops are versatile, thanks to their resistance to heat, UV, and moisture.

Our concrete table top process

Making a concrete table top is complex — multiple steps, careful timing. We create the mould (usually particleboard coated with melamine), mix the concrete to a custom formula, carefully pour, fill the mould with a trowel, tamp to remove bubbles, then cover with plastic sheeting and let cure for 18+ hours before demoulding.

Install + sealing

The last step is installation. Let CoastCrete pros handle the entire process — from building the mould right up to the install. We deliver with bracing + foam protection, lift into place (crane if needed for upper floors), precision-fit on your cabinetry, and finish with a food-safe penetrating sealer that resists acid stains.

Indoor + outdoor use

Our concrete table tops work just as well in a modern kitchen as they do in an outdoor entertainment area — thanks to their resistance to heat, UV, and moisture. Outdoor BBQ tops, alfresco serving benches, pizza-oven surrounds, indoor kitchen islands, vanities, dining tables — we cast them all.

FAQs

Common questions

How much do concrete table tops cost?

Concrete tabletops are typically designed by hand. Because of the handcrafted nature, you'll pay more in labour than mass-produced options. However, compared to natural stone or designer materials, concrete tabletops are far more affordable and offer comparable durability — increasing the long-term value of your home.

Is sealing really necessary?

Yes — sealers prevent water absorption and staining. Make sure you never place anything hot on the sealed surface to avoid ruining it. Food-grade sealers may be needed if the tabletop will be installed in a food prep area like a kitchen or bar.

How is the maintenance process?

When properly sealed, concrete table tops are easy to manage. Use a pH-neutral cleaner and never use rough scrubbing pads or abrasive cleansers — they damage the sealer.

Will the table top scratch?

If cut directly, yes — it will indeed cause minor scratches. Use a chopping board. The good news is that damage is limited with the sealer on top, which makes most scratches repairable.

Should I worry about cracks?

Natural shrinkage will cause minor cracks to appear. However, they do not affect the structure of the concrete table top — in fact, shrinkage can enhance its character. They become part of the look.

Can you customise concrete tabletops?

Absolutely! Contrary to popular belief, concrete can take on different styles. Concrete tabletops are completely customisable — you can select the colour, shape, embeds, and edge profile you want. You can replicate the appearance of granite, marble or other materials while keeping concrete's durability.

How durable are concrete counters?

Concrete is a material known for its durability — historical structures like the Coliseum, Pantheon, and Pompeii still exist today. Concrete tabletops can be reinforced with glass fibres for added strength. The concrete finish can also be heat-resistant, useful for kitchen counters where you could place hot plates.

Should I worry about stains?

Not really. Counters made from concrete are made to last for years — though they can be vulnerable to stains if not sealed properly. The key is in the sealer. Wipe away spills and messes when you see them so they don't stick. Unlike tile, there are no grout lines to worry about cleaning.

How long does it take to complete a tabletop?

Custom countertops do take time — at least a few weeks for design, mould building, casting, curing (18+ hours minimum), and sealing. You'll also need to wait before you can use the tabletop for food preparation. If you're pressed for time it may not suit your schedule.

What's the process of making concrete counters?

The general process: mould building using melamine-coated particleboard, mixing the concrete with the formulated benchtop mix, careful pouring, trowelling, tamping to remove bubbles, curing under plastic sheeting for at least 18 hours, demoulding by pulling from the edges, sanding/finishing, and finally sealing.
