Why honed

Why choose honed aggregate concrete?

A premium step up from exposed aggregate. Smoother under bare feet, easier to clean, just as durable. The preferred decorative finish for Perth outdoor areas.

01

Refined look

Contemporary matt finish that suits both modern and classic architecture. Subtle satin sheen — never glaring.

02

Comfortable surface

Smooth and pleasant underfoot. Cooler than dark concrete in summer — gentler on bare feet around pools and alfresco areas.

03

Low maintenance

Sealed surface resists dirt and stains. Hose down to keep it sharp. Smoother than exposed aggregate so dirt and leaves brush off easily.

04

Slip-rated + durable

Mechanical honing leaves a micro-texture in the surface — safe for wet areas around pools and spas. Built for Perth's climate.

Why CoastCrete

What is honed aggregate?

Honed concrete is one of Perth's most popular decorative concrete finishes for outdoor living areas. It begins as exposed aggregate, which is then ground back to create a smooth, matt surface that reveals the decorative stones in the mix. The result is a clean, contemporary look that is durable, slip-resistant, and low maintenance.

Sealed for Perth conditions

This finish is sealed to protect against stains, dirt, and Perth's weather conditions, ensuring long-lasting performance. Because of its balance of style and practicality, honed concrete is the preferred choice for outdoor areas.

Best applications

Alfresco floors, pool surrounds, indoor living rooms, kitchen floors, and garage-to-driveway continuity. Anywhere you want decorative concrete that's gentler underfoot than exposed aggregate.

FAQs

Common questions

What's the difference between honed and polished concrete?

It's common to find contractors that use these two terms interchangeably. Both involve a mechanical process applied to the existing concrete surface. After the initial grinding, the difference emerges. Honed reveals the exposed aggregate (from zero to full exposure) — it mainly involves grinding and sealing. Polished concrete uses chemical hardeners and finer grit pads, taking longer to produce a higher gloss finish.

Is honed aggregate slippery?

Honed aggregate can look slippery and give people the wrong impression — but it is actually a non-slip surface. The matt appearance (unlike polished concrete) hides this. Many residents and commercial businesses choose honed concrete for pool surrounds and commercial settings because of the slip-resistant texture. A non-slip treatment may be applied for added safety in wet areas.

Is polished concrete simply the shinier version of concrete?

Easy to think that, but polished concrete is more than reflective concrete. Its durability is one reason we recommend it for industrial and commercial spaces. The sheen level can be customised — it doesn't have to be a mirror-like surface. There's a broad aesthetic range, with varying colours achievable using dyes, pigments, and acid stains.

Is polished concrete better than tile?

Tile is tough, long-lasting, and cheap — but polished concrete has more benefits in most applications. Polished concrete is more resistant to marks and scratches than tile, easier to maintain (no grout to clean), and far more durable under heavy use.

Can polished aggregate concrete be used in wet areas like a shower base?

Polished concrete is susceptible to moisture — when left wet it can produce mould and mildew, and water penetration can cause cracking. For shower bases we recommend honed concrete with a non-slip finish + extra sealer. Polished concrete is best kept to dry indoor zones.

How long does it take to polish concrete?

Site preparation typically takes 2-3 days. The polishing itself is a mechanical process, so there's no concrete cure time required — you can walk on the surface during grinding and polishing. Once a sealer is applied, it dries in under an hour for foot traffic.

Can honed concrete be used outdoors?

Absolutely — alfrescos, pool surrounds and patios are the most common Perth applications. The matt finish handles UV without yellowing and stays cool underfoot.
